The two-exam entry credential for IT support roles, covering hardware and networking in Core 1 and operating systems and security in Core 2.
A+ is the only CompTIA credential that requires two exams, and both must come from the same series. Core 1 covers hardware, mobile devices, networking and virtualisation; Core 2 covers operating systems, security, software troubleshooting and operational procedures.
There is no required order, though most candidates take Core 1 first because Core 2 assumes some of its vocabulary. You have three years from passing the first exam to pass the second, but the series must match — a 2022-series pass cannot be combined with a 2025-series pass.
The credential is aimed squarely at the first IT job: help desk, desktop support and field service roles. It is valid for three years and renews through continuing education or by earning a higher CompTIA certification.

The hardware half of A+: mobile devices, networking, hardware components, virtualisation and cloud basics, and a heavy emphasis on structured troubleshooting.
The software half of A+: operating system installation and configuration, security practices, software troubleshooting, and the operational procedures a technician follows.
